說(shuō)到“火熱”，不免聯(lián)想到它的對(duì)立面“冰冷”，按《漢英詞典》，英語(yǔ)只譯作 “ice-cold”。它無(wú)疑是一個(gè)很貼切的譯名。
至于“火熱”，《漢英詞典》為我們提供了更多的譯名：① burning hot，② fiery，③ fervent，④ intimate。大致說(shuō)①和②為“火熱”之本義；③和④則為其轉(zhuǎn)義。
這里，來(lái)補(bǔ)充一個(gè)譯名。這也得從“冰冷”的譯名“ice-cold”說(shuō)起；既然“冰冷”可譯作“ice-cold”。為什么“火熱”就不可以譯作——而且是首先譯作“fire hot”呢？這“fire hot”便是我們?yōu)?ldquo;火熱”所提供的第五個(gè)譯法。“fire-hot”這種譯名同“ice-cold”一樣，是英語(yǔ)習(xí)慣用法。有例為證：
